The Anthropic API key is what powers the Rangy Agent — the chat-based assistant inside Rangy that turns a plain-language request into a finished image. You describe what you want, and the Agent works out the rest: it picks the right AI model, writes a detailed prompt, runs the generation, and drops the result onto a freeform canvas you can keep building on. The Agent's primary "direct API" tier runs on Claude, Anthropic's family of models, so it needs your personal Anthropic API key to do its thinking.

In practice the amounts are small, because Rangy deliberately keeps the Agent's context lean: it sends only what's needed for the task at hand rather than dragging your whole history into every request. Troubleshooting

"Invalid API key" or the Agent won't respond

Double-check that you copied the entire key, including the sk-ant- prefix, with no extra spaces. If you are still stuck, create a fresh key in the Anthropic Console and paste the new one into Rangy.

The Agent fails with a billing or credit error

This usually means your Anthropic account has no payment method or has run out of credit. Open the billing section of the Anthropic Console and add a card or top up your balance.

The key saved but image generation still fails

The Anthropic key only powers the Agent's thinking — it doesn't render images. The actual generation runs through providers like Replicate, Kie.ai, Freepik, or Google AI. If one of those keys is missing, Rangy will tell you which to set up.
