How to Get a Replicate API Key (and Use It in Rangy)

Replicate is the primary AI provider behind Rangy. It runs most of the image models you generate with — Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2, Seedream, Flux, GPT Image — plus the Crystal upscaler. To use any of them, Rangy needs your personal Replicate API key: a token that lets the app talk directly to Replicate on your behalf.

This guide walks you through getting that key from scratch — creating an account, adding billing, generating the token — and then shows you exactly where to paste it inside Rangy and which features it unlocks. Part 1: How to Get Your Replicate API Key

1. Create a Replicate account Go to replicate.com and sign up. You can register with an email address, or sign in with a GitHub or Google account — whichever is fastest for you.
2. Add a billing method Open your account settings and go to the billing section. Add a payment card or prepaid credit. Replicate charges per generation (you only pay for what you run), so a small starting balance is plenty to begin with.
3. Open the API tokens page In your account settings, find the API tokens section. This is where personal access tokens are created and managed.
4. Create a new token Click Create token, give it a name you will recognize later (for example, "Rangy"), and confirm. Replicate generates a token that begins with r8_ followed by a long string of characters.
5. Copy the token Copy the full token immediately. Treat it like a password — anyone with this token can run generations billed to your account.

Part 2: Where the Replicate Key Is Used Inside Rangy

Once you have the token, connecting it to Rangy takes about ten seconds. The video below shows where it goes and what it turns on.

1. Open Settings in Rangy Launch Rangy and open Settings from the navigation, then select the API Keys section.
2. Paste your token Find the Replicate card, paste your r8_ token into the input field, and click Save. The status label changes to "Configured" once it's accepted.
3. Start generating Switch to the Core or Pro tab, write a prompt, pick a model, and generate. Anything that routes through Replicate now works.

What the Replicate key unlocks

Replicate is Rangy's broadest provider. With a Replicate key configured you can use:

• Core image models — Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2, Seedream, Flux, GPT Image and the rest of the generation lineup.
• The Crystal upscaler — Rangy's default upscaler for clean, high-resolution results at 2x to 10x.
• Image-to-image and editing flows — restoration, colorization, and reference-guided generation that depend on these models.

Because it covers the most ground, Replicate is the one key we recommend every Rangy user sets up first. The other providers — Kie.ai, Freepik, Google AI, and Anthropic — are optional and add specific extra capabilities on top.

How Much Does Replicate Cost?

Replicate uses pay-as-you-go pricing. There is no monthly subscription — you are billed per generation, and the cost depends on which model you run and the output resolution. In practice, a single image is usually a few cents. Rangy shows you an estimated cost before each generation so there are no surprises, and you can top up your Replicate balance whenever you like.

Troubleshooting

"Invalid API key" or generations fail immediately

Double-check that you copied the entire token, including the r8_ prefix, with no extra spaces. If you are still stuck, create a fresh token on Replicate and paste the new one into Rangy.

Generations fail with a billing or quota error

This usually means your Replicate account has no payment method or has run out of credit. Open your Replicate billing settings and add a card or top up your balance.

The key saved but a specific model still won't run

A few models are served by other providers. If a model needs Kie.ai, Freepik, or Google AI, Rangy will tell you which key is missing — set that one up too.
